Why Is My Car Making That Noise?
Don’t Ignore the Rattle: 3 Common Noises That Could Save You Thousands in 2026
Modern vehicles are quieter than ever, which means when you hear a new clunk or
squeal, it’s your car telling you to get it inspected. Identifying these problems early can be
the difference between a small cheap repair and a major expensive repair.
1. A Cold-Start Squeal condition
Sound: A high-pitched squeal right after you start the vehicle, especially on cold days.
Cause: The most common cause is a worn serpentine belt or a failing tensioner. Most
modern vehicles will have a single belt driven off the crank pulley which powers vehicle
accessories such as your alternator, power steering pump and water pump. Some older
vehicles may have multiple belts; failure can cause loss of charging, power steering, and
even engine cooling.
Correction: A quick inspection for cracks or glazing and determining the source of the
noise using a mechanics stethoscope. Replacing a belt is routine maintenance; waiting
until it snaps can leave you stranded and lead to further expensive repairs.
2. Clunking or rattling when going over bumps condition
Sound: A hollow clunk or rattling noise when driving over bumps or uneven pavement.
Cause: Worn suspension components such as ball joints, control arms and bushings, tie
rods, sway bar links and bushing. Edmonton road conditions, especially post-winter
potholes, snow and ice ruts can accelerate this wear.
Correction: We perform a test drive to verify the condition, then perform a suspension
inspection to pinpoint the worn component. Replacing worn suspension components early
avoids premature tire wear and the chance of a part failure which can be dangerous for you
and other drivers on the road.
3. Grinding noise/Brake squeal condition
Sound: A metal scraping or grinding noise when applying the brakes.
Cause: Your brake pads have worn out to the wear indicators or worse, the metal backing
plate. Brake components should be free moving; seized slide pins, calipers or even pads
seized in the bracket can cause premature and uneven brake wear.
Correction: We perform a brake inspection to determine the cause of the concern.
Replacement of brake pads and rotors and possibly calipers. Driving with metal-on-metal
brakes significantly increases your stopping distance and repair costs and can lead to
complete brake loss if a caliper is damaged.
